Succumbed

Today was our first - and possibly last - trip to Toys "backwards R" Us. To my utter incredulity, every one of us gave in almost instantly, to our archetypal roles in the consumerist-impulsivity-crying jag tableau that is the Family Outing to the Toy Store.

Little One: (wailing) I want out of this stroller!
Mother: Oh, look, it's a cute pink chair. I want her to have this.
Father: But it's festooned with fantasy images of passive and impossibly phenotyped princesses that the patriarchy uses to enslave and demean femalekind!
Mother: I know - and I'm the one who's supposed to say that - but look how cute she is! Here honey, sit down.
Little One: [freed from stroller, sits in foam chair that looks like a squashed Peep©]
Father: You really want that thing in the living room? It's pure kitsch.
Mother: Honey, look - she loves it!
Father: Yeah, I guess that is pretty cute.
Little One: [stands up from chair, picks it up, and staggers down aisle triumphantly]

So much for bringing up baby in a more enlightened world, eh? LOVED the commentary and the fact that you were helpless to resist the evil machinations of Disney. Having just visited there for business, I can verify that it is truly evil...

I, too, enjoyed the commentary. It appears that Thumblini does love that chair, though, despite its archetypical depictions.

Hi there. We too succumbed to the allure of the princesses. We have the pink chair and the pink princess inflatable sleeping bag for family movie night! Eve is 2 1/2 and loves to play dress-up. Princess dresses are her favorite. Hopefully we are not scarring her for life! Let me know what Marshall says about that...ha,ha! Hope all is well and think of you often.

ooh I love princesses and all things Disney. I'm glad Thumbelini does too.

Sean had a winnie the pooh "Mini sofa" that he loved for a couple of years.

We are such the Disney family-even did the Disney cruise--which I can highly recommend when your princesss is older. We took SEan after he turned 5. Even though my husband is not as Disney crazy as his wife and son, he even had a WONDERFUL time. :)

Something to think about when the princess is older. It's a great vacation. :)

I used to go nuts on toys, etc when Seanie was little. Joe joked that he cried when there was NOT a box from e-bay waiting every day.
But, he got older, and I got much, much better.
I'm still not sure who is the bigger child...me or my son. I think it's ME! :)

Well, it looks like she is ENJOYING the throne of oppression.

Yet another inevitable rite of passage to parenthood - purchasing (pink or blue) crapola at Toys R Us :)!

You caved!!! Too funny (as I guiltily look over at my kids collection of my own caving purchases)

And so it begins (Patrick had a very cute Sesame Street one)...We had over a 20 minute battle in a gift shop at Disney over a Power Ranger toy "No you will not have weapons!" I said firmly, not only did we leave FL with Power Rangers, but a Buzz Lightyear lazer, Peter Pan sword, and a Captain Hook "hook" to boot! Why are their cute faces so persuasive?

Hey Marshall watch out for those toilet seats! :)

LOVE IT!! Aila looks adorable in her little pink chair!
And as for your previous post (I just caught up on both at once)- beautifully written. May you all have many happy and healthy years together as a family for a long, long time.
Congratulations on 6 months!

Aila is ADORABLE - and I just love the story behind the chair :)

When we were shopping for our niece we came upon the *pink* ailse of Barbie. Pat was in shock. He said that there is no way our daughter will ever see this. He said she will get one toy a year. Yeah RIGHT! He's such a pushover himself!!! It was so funny to see Pat in a pink girly girl aisle at Toys "R" Us!! He had that dazed look in his eye when he realized what it meant to have a girl. I just kissed his cheek and happily shopped!

LOL! So funny. Isn't it amazing how kids turn your world upside down and things you thought a year ago that you'd never do, you're now doing (or buying)? I have to just shake my head in amusement when I look over my once sophisticated living room and realize it's been turned into a multi-color (often clashing) play room. Ahhhh!!! :-) They're so darn fun though!

I'm proud to say I have not yet been to Toys backwardR Us and have thus avoided the princessesy items. I used to have hope that I could get away with it but you just crushed it ;-)

Aila is darling and I love the scavenger hunts to find your new blogs!

I am crrracking up!!! And then crying at the next post! Good lawd, you guys are too much! "Just a little princess chair" can really hold so much meaning, no?

I can't believe how much your little darlin' has changed in the past 6 months. It's just awesome.

I spoke to Andrea shortly after she saw you guys in Chicago. She was very excited and had wonderful things to say. I was so happy you all got to meet up!
